A “Fanciful French” Christmas Tale - Croire au Père Noël

Enchantment in the Air: A Christmas Eve Like No Other

It was the evening before Christmas. Santa's workshop was a whirlwind of festive activities. Elves scurried about. Their pointed shoes clicked rhythmically against the wooden floor, while they were weaving between workbenches cluttered with ribbons, wrapping paper, and an endless array of toys, while outside "il faisait un froid de canard", as the French would put it.

Mystery in the Workshop: Santa's Unusual Behavior

Still, there was no trace of the joyous hymns that usually echoed in the halls and everybody felt the heavy air, laden with a palpable sense of unease. In the center of it all, Santa sat silently, nervously taking out his mobile phone from time to time and grunting while he was reading. In a far corner of the workshop, Tinsel and Whisper, Santa's most trusted aids, huddled together speaking in hushed tones that blended with the faint rustling of wrapping paper.

Tinsel and Whisper's Concern

"What's up with the big man?" asked Tinsel concerned. "He has been like this for over two weeks now".

Tinsel and Whisper Discussing their Concerns

Whisper nodded her head, her eyes darting around to ensure their privacy. "Yes, I noticed it too, " she said. "... ever since he discovered that blog... Fanciful something... ", she added.

"Oh, no, is that true?" replied Tinsel, " I heard the reindeer talking about it the other day, they were saying it's just a language blog about French sayings. I met Samo this morning and he was gleaming with pride due to all those fancy expressions in French about dogs that he learnt.  'oh! il fait un temps de chien this, 'j'ai un mal de chien' that. I was like 'I get it, Samo, you're a dog, there are so many French expressions about you, now let's get over it'. But I can't imagine what could have brought Santa down this way."

"Why don't we just go and ask him?" said Whisper.

A French Idiom: Père Noël's Unexpected Discovery

Whisper and Tinsel moved toward Santa with a gentle, almost reverent tread, their eyes filled with concern. They found him staring pensively into the flickering flames of the fireplace, lost in thought. "Santa, may we ask what troubles you so?" Tinsel inquired softly, his voice barely more than a murmur in the quiet room.

Santa turned towards them. "It's the adults," he said after a moment, his voice tinged with disbelief. "Do you know, they have a saying for someone they consider naive and gullible? It's 'croire au Père Noël' - believing in Father Christmas, in me." He shook his head, his usual jolly demeanor shadowed by sadness. "To think that belief in the magic we bring is seen as foolishness..."

Père Noël

Whisper stepped forward, her expression thoughtful. "Santa, remember, it's not entirely their fault. As adults, their left brain hemisphere, the one that governs logic and reason, becomes so dominant. It overshadows their capacity for wonder and belief. They lose their connection not just to you, but to all the magical beings they once believed in - fairies, leprechauns, even us elves"

"And let's not forget", added Tinsel absentmindedly scratching his rather prominent elfin nose, "their lofty standard they now have on our kind, ever since those epic 'Ring' films... But right now, Santa, think of the children, their noses pressed against cold window panes, eyes scanning the starry sky for any sign of a sleigh and reindeer; about how they, softly clutching teddy bears and worn-out blankets are fighting sleep in their beds, hoping they will catch a glimpse of Santa Claus and finally drifting off into sleep realm. And the pure joy on Christmas morning, when they find the presents you've left – that, Santa, is the heart of why we do all this."

Santa listened, the weight of his worries gradually lifting. With a slow nod, he rose to his feet, a renewed sense of purpose lighting up his eyes. "You're right, Tinsel, Whisper. It's time to spread the magic once again."

Rediscovering Joy: The Essence of Santa's Journey

As the sleigh soared into the crisp night, guided by the bright stars, Santa's heart swelled with the timeless joy of Christmas. He journeyed the world, leaving behind a trail of wonder and delight. Upon his return, the weariness that had once clouded his spirit was gone, replaced by a rejuvenated sense of fulfillment. Tinsel's words echoed in his mind, reaffirming his belief in the magic they were all a part of.

The workshop welcomed him back, a haven of warmth and light against the cold Arctic dawn. Santa looked around at the eager faces of his elves and knew without a doubt: the magic they created together, for every believing child and for those adults who still held a flicker of childhood in their hearts, was truly worth it all.

But wait, there is a book!
